What if a local website could do more than simply tell you what already exists in your community?

That’s one of the questions we’ve been working on with TownConnect.

Over the past while, a lot of the work behind Ladysmith.com hasn’t been about adding another page, directory or social feature. It has been about connecting everything together and making the whole system behave more like a community.

A simple example:

Imagine someone searches locally for pet sitting, a locksmith, computer help, a particular service, product or activity and nothing useful comes up.

Normally, that’s the end of the search.

But there is actually something important hidden in that failed search:

Someone in the community needs something that may not currently be available locally.

So we started asking a different question:

What if TownConnect could remember that need and help the community respond to it?

That led us into some of the more interesting work we’ve been doing.

A resident can choose “Keep looking for me.”

TownConnect can begin recognizing when multiple people are looking for similar things, without exposing who searched for them.

That information can eventually become a useful local opportunity.

A business might discover that people nearby are looking for something it already offers but hasn’t listed properly.

Another business might realize there is enough local demand to start offering it.

TownConnect can then help that business work through what it wants to offer, update the appropriate local listings, make the new service discoverable in search, and reconnect the people who originally said they were looking for it.

That creates a very different cycle:

People search → the community reveals a need → local businesses see the opportunity → new local supply develops → people find what they were looking for.

We’ve also been doing a major rethink of how TownConnect itself should feel to use.

The technology behind it can be complicated.

Using it shouldn’t be.

Residents shouldn’t need to understand which TownConnect module contains something. A business owner shouldn’t have to understand our internal architecture to figure out where to list a service. And people shouldn’t be confronted with technical language just because complicated things are happening behind the scenes.

So we’ve been building what we call the TownConnect Human-Centred Experience Layer.

That means simpler language, clearer navigation, better mobile design, consistent controls, easier identity switching, clearer status and progress information, and more guidance based on what a person is trying to accomplish rather than which part of the system they happen to be using.

The larger idea behind all of this is pretty simple.

Global platforms are extremely good at learning what people want.

But most of that knowledge leaves the community.

We’re interested in turning that idea around.

What if a town could learn from its own needs — and use that knowledge to make the local community stronger?

That is where TownConnect is heading.

Not simply another directory.

Not simply another marketplace.

Not simply another social network.

But a locally focused digital system where search, businesses, organizations, events, services, conversations and community needs can begin working together.

We’re building it first here in Ladysmith.

And some of the most interesting work is happening underneath the surface.
